Eyelash and Eyebrow Growth Serums, Do They Really Work?

I believe fuller and thicker eyelashes and eyebrows give the face a more defined and beautiful frame. There are currently many options on the market to achieve more growth or fullness, from eyelash extensions to eyebrow waterproof pencils, but I'm going to focus on serums that claim to stimulate the growth and thickness of eyelashes and eyebrows.

Many of them include ingredients such as peptides, vitamins (such as biotin), botanical extracts, and prostaglandin analogs. These components are believed to nourish the hair follicles, stimulate blood flow, and prolong the growth phase of the hair cycle.

** The growth cycle consists of three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Growth serums aim to extend the anagen phase, allowing for longer and thicker lashes and brows. *

Benefits of Eyelash and Eyebrow Growth Serums

  • Increased Length and Thickness: Some clinical studies have shown that some growth serums can promote the growth of longer and thicker eyelashes and eyebrows. These serums may facilitate the proliferation of hair follicle cells, leading to improved hair density and length.

  • Prolonged Hair Growth Phase: Certain ingredients found in growth serums have been shown to extend the anagen phase of the hair growth cycle. This extended growth phase allows lashes and brows to grow for a more extended period, resulting in enhanced fullness.

  • Protection Against Breakage and Fall-out: Growth serums often contain conditioning agents that help strengthen the hair shafts and reduce breakage. By fortifying the lashes and brows, these serums minimize hair fall-out and promote healthier and more resilient hair follicles.

Potential Disadvantages and considerations

Even though some growth serums have demonstrated positive effects in clinical studies, the overall scientific evidence supporting their efficacy remains limited. More extensive research is necessary to validate the claims made by these products. In addition, personal responses to growth serums can vary due to factors such as genetics, overall health, and lifestyle. Some individuals may experience significant improvements, while others may notice minimal changes. Furthermore, certain growth serums containing prostaglandin analogs may have potential side effects, such as eye irritation, redness, darkening of the iris and the skin around the application area.

  • Currently (July 2024) Latisse and generic bimatoprost are the only FDA-approved prescription eyelash serums; they are not approved for eyebrows.

  • Not all serums contain bimatoprost, some contain isopropyl cloprostenate, which is another prostaglandin, often found in over the counter serums, and which is not FDA approved.

The scientific evidence and research studies about growth serums available are limited, although they have gained popularity as potential solutions for enhancing natural beauty. These serums offer promising benefits such as increased length and thickness, prolonged hair growth phase, and protection against breakage. However, it is essential to consider the limitations of the current research, individual variations in results, and potential side effects. Exploring alternative methods and maintaining a healthy lifestyle that nurtures hair growth can complement the use of growth serums.
